A family with roots
in the Jura
Our origins
It's difficult to trace the precise origins of the Pirou family, but our house is heir to a line of winegrowers from father to son, as has been the tradition for centuries in the Jura vineyards. The name Pirou seems to have a dual origin and meaning: both the nickname of a child in a local dialect and derived from the word pirol, itself from the Latin petrus (stone) and thus seems to testify to rocky soils, numerous in the vineyards.
Light as an emblem
The emblem of the Pirou family is the sun, which radiates and warms hearts, just like our wines! In a northern vineyard like the Jura, with its harsh and sometimes long winters, we see it as a nod to the importance of the sun in ensuring the perfect ripeness of our different grape varieties: Savagnin, Poulsard and Trousseau in particular.
The sun is also reflected in the lovely yellow and golden hues of our wines in the glass, with fresh or more golden accents depending on the vintage and appellation. Particularly our famous Vin Jaune, whose distinctive color has made the reputation of the Jura and of our company.
